As a junior in 1995, Clay finished 24th in the state meet to earn All-State honors. He finished 7th in the sectional, 6th in the regional, and 8th in the semi-state. Clay improved all of his places as a senior in 1996 by finishing 3rd in the sectional, 2nd in the regional, and 6 in the semi-state leading up to a 7th place finish in the state meet. Clay's 7th place finish not only got him All-State honors but also placed him on the Indiana All-Star team. As an All-Star, Clay participated in the Mideast Cross Country Championships where he was the 4th Indiana finisher.
