Rafe was the sectional pole vault champion in 1995, and followed that performance up with a 2nd place regional finish and capped his senior season with a 4th place All-State finish at the state meet. This was Rafe's second year at the state meet. As a junior in 1994 he was 4th in the sectional and 2nd in the regional to advance to the state meet. Rafe also qualified for the regional as a sophomore in 1993.
