HEBRON
BOYS BASKETBALL
4 YEAR RULE
During the late 1970's and early 1980's a pattern emerged at Hebron. Every 4 years there was a very good, if not great team taking the floor. With a little more research,
the pattern could be seen back into the 1950's. As time went on the streak continued into to 1990's and can be seen today. There have been plenty of great teams that don't
fall into this 4 year rule, but the numbers show that the 4th years have been overwhelmingly better than the non 4th years.
The first 4th year was 1953-54. Hawk accomplishments that year were: the first twenty win season in school history (22-3), and South County Tourney, Porter County
Tourney and sectional championships. The 1957-58 season saw the Hawks win 17 games, including the South County Tourney.
The Porter County Conference started in 1958-59, a non 4th year. In the first three years of competition, Hebron's record was 7-13, while placing two players on the
All-Conference team. The 1961-62 season, the third 4th year, saw the Hawks record a 7-0 conference record and place 3 players on the All-Conference team. The Hawks
of 1965-66 won the South County Tourney on their way to a 15 win season.
The fifth 4th year was 1969-70, when Hebron posted a 21-2 overall record, including 5-0 in the conference. South County Tourney and Porter County Tourney championships
were highlights of the year, as well as placing a record 4 players on the All-Conference team.
A .604 winning percentage in 1973-74 marked one of the lowest winning percentages of any 4th year team. This certainly doesn't mean that it was a down year. This group
not only won the South County Tourney, but also became the first team in school history to make it to the regional championship game.
The five 4th years, including 1977-78, 1981-82, 1985-86, 1989-90 and 1993-94 were unbelievable. In those five seasons, 20+ win, undefeated conference records and
Porter County Tourney championships were a constant. South County Tourney titles were won in 1981-82, 1989-90 and 1993-94. The 1989-90 and 1993-94 teams
completed undefeated regular seasons along with sectional championships. The 1993-94 team made it to the regional championship. The 1981-82 team became the 4th team
in PCC history to get 4 players on the All-Conference team, tying the 1969-70 Hebron team and 2 Morgan teams.
The twelvth 4th year, 1997-98, wasn't spectacular. But, there was still something special about this year. A 7-14 record doesn't appear to be special, but considering
coming off of back-to-back 3 win seasons and only 1 PCC win, this season was a big turnaround for the program. The 1997-98 season was another example of the 4th
year rule affecting the Hawk program.
2001-02 was a welcome sight at Hebron. After a record 6 straight losing seasons, the Hawks got over the hump in a big way. A 17-6 overall record, PCC round robin
championship, South County and Porter County Tourney titles were greatly appreciated by the Hawk fans.
Another great 4th year was recorded during the 2005-06 season. The team had a record of 17-5. Hebron won the sectional for the first time in 12 seasons. The Hawks
also finished 2nd in the PCC round robin standings with a 6-1 record.
After an 8 win season followed by a 5 win season the 2009-10 Hawks won 10 games and were only 1 game under .500.
It was only appropriate that the 100th season of boys basketball at Hebron came in a 4th year. The 2013-14 team won 13 games including the PCC tourney.
2017-18 was the seventeenth 4th year. The team was 13-10 overall and 4-3 in the PCC. The team made it to the championship game of the sectional.
